AED AED-SHOP Assists in Implementing an AED Program

Nov 9, 2009

AED-SHOP, a division of HeartSafe America, Inc. (HSA), is a national distributor of Medical Equipment, with an emphasis on Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and life-saving equipment. It is our goal to help reduce the numbers of deaths from Sudden Cardiac Arrest by increasing public awareness and expanding the number of Automated External Defibrillators in public and private facilities.

AED-SHOP assists all types of organizations with implementing an AED Program suited to the organization’s needs. The task of creating an AED Program can be daunting. Many people do not have an idea of where to begin when creating and implementing their AED Program. AED-SHOP is here to assist organizations in implementing an AED Program.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to see if your organization is need for an AED Program:

1. Does my organization need an AED Program?

AED-SHOP recommends that all organizations have an AED Program in place. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can occur at any time to anyone. Being prepared for this situation can help save the life of the victim that suffers from SCA.

2. How many AEDs would my organization need for the AED Program?

The amount of AEDs needed is best resolved by the 2-3 minute drop to shock rule. The 2-3 minute drop to shock rule means that it takes a layperson 2-3 minutes to retrieve the AED, drop, and shock the victim. Other factors when considering the amount of AEDs would be the size of the location, and if there are multiple sites at the location. AED-SHOP can help assess the amount of AEDs that would be recommended for the organization’s location.

3. How does my organization know what AED and AED accessories would best fit its needs?

AED-SHOP has created several AED packages that have been created to meet a variety of organizations’ needs and these packages have been priced to meet most organization’s budgets for creating an AED Program. AED-SHOP can also work with each organization to determine which AED best fits the needs of the organization.

4. Do members of my organization need training in order to use the AEDs?

Training is not a requirement for purchasing or possessing an AED. AED-SHOP highly recommends that several members of the organization receive training on how the AED works, how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and how to respond to a person that is suffering from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The AEDs are created so that a layperson is able to use the AED without being trained. The AEDs are simple to use and many of the AEDs have CPR coaching to help ensure that the layperson is able to assist the victim.

AED-SHOP assisted Manzanola School District in Manzanola, Colorado, with implementing their AED Program. AED-SHOP sent an email to the Manzanola School District describing the effects of the SCA, the packages and services offered by AED-SHOP.Manzanola School District felt it was time for them to implement their AED Program.

Manzanola School District purchased two Philips HeartStart OnSite School Packages from AED-SHOP. The Philips HeartStart OnSite School Packages included the Philips HeartStart OnSite, infant/child pads, an alarmed cabinet, our data management solutions program, a free medical authorization, and free shipping. The school packages went to the elementary school and to the junior/senior high school. Each of their schools is now equipped with an AED and has the ability to save someone suffering from SCA.

AED Medical Equipment AED-SHOP and OxySure Dallas, TX

Nov 5, 2009

AED-SHOP a division of HeartSafe America, Inc. (HSA) is a national distributor of Medical Equipment, with an emphasis on Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and life-saving equipment. It is our goal to help reduce the numbers of deaths from Sudden Cardiac Arrest by increasing public awareness and expanding the number of Automated External Defibrillators in public facilities, and to create awareness of the Oxysure portable oxygen tanks and how this product can save a life.

AED-SHOP has taken a proactive approach to equipping thousands of public and private facilities with medical equipment solutions such as Automatic External Defibrillators (AED), AED accessories, CPR training, and First Aid supplies, services and training.

AED-SHOP offers a unique medical product called OxySure. The Oxysure product is a portable oxygen system that provides pure oxygen to a person with labored breathing. The Oxysure portable oxygen tank is composed of thermoplastic products, which stores the compound for creating the pure oxygen. The tank is reusable and the cartridge is disposable.

What is the purpose of the OxySure portable oxygen tank?

  • The purpose of the portable oxygen tank is so that a responder is able to administer oxygen to a person with labored breathing. Waiting for emergency service can take a while. By having portable oxygen onsite can help relieve a person’s labored breathing within minutes verses waiting for an emergency responder.

How does the OxySure portable oxygen tank work?

The OxySure portable oxygen tank is setup to work with a three step system to ensure that the responder is able to administer oxygen as quickly as possible.

  • The first step, the responder must plug the mask into the portable oxygen tank.
  • The second step, the responder must turn the knob.
  • The third step, the responder must apply the mask over the nose and mouth of the victim.

The pure oxygen is released from the tank to the victim via the mask.

What makes the Oxysure portable oxygen tank safer than a regular oxygen tank?

  • The Oxysure portable oxygen tank has a cartridge that contains the compound that creates the pure oxygen.
  • The compound is in a powder form until the knob on the tank is turned. Once the knob has turned, the compound is release with an accelerant that helps to product the pure oxygen.
  • Flammability is not an issue since the compound is in powder form. When oxygen is in a gaseous state its potential for combustion is high.

AED-SHOP has partnered with OxySure to offer this unique medical product. The Oxysure product is becoming more and more popular for sporting events when oxygen needs to be administered to an athlete with labored breathing. The portable oxygen can be a life-saver just as an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is.

Channel 8 produced a piece of media detailing an incident when the OxySure portable oxygen tank helped to save an young athlete’s life. See the video below:

Defibrillators Save Lives, Reduce Liability Risk
By Greg Slusser, Lodging Hospitality
A guest or employee suffering sudden cardiac arrest in your hotel must be treated within three to five minutes to have a good chance of surviving. The necessity of rapid "time to shock" is why a hotel should consider having automated external defibrillators (AED) on-site. Designed to save victims of sudden cardiac arrest-the leading cause of death in America-AED shock, or defibrillate, the heart back into normal rhythm. Up to 1,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest each day.

To promote Automated External Defibrillators (AED) awareness, AED-SHOP will educate the public by actively participating in Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) programs, town-hall meetings and community forums. Public access to defibrillation (PAD) means making Automated External Defibrillators (AED) available in public and/or private places where large numbers of people gather or where people who are at high risk for heart attacks live.

According to Wall Street Journal: Local emergency medical services average six to 12 minutes to arrive at a rescue scene, according to a nationwide study, and may be too late to help a sudden cardiac arrest victim. For example, in San Diego, only four percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims survived waiting for paramedics, while 74 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims receiving AED treatment on-site survived.

As a result of this initiative in the public and private places, AED-SHOP will accomplish its goal of educating the community of the dangers of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

AED-SHOP has earned the business and respect of many fortune 1000 companies nation-wide. Whether in the private or public sector, organizations have chosen AED-Shop as a result of their public educational marketing campaign and as a full end-to-end medical equipment solutions provider of medical emergency equipment with an emphasis on Automated External Defibrillators (AED).

AED-SHOP, a division of HeartSafe America, Inc. along with Philips Medical, a manufacture of (AED) Automated External Defibrillator products, provides Snap Fitness’ 1100 franchises with AED packages and maintenance programs.

In an effort to provide Snap Fitness with AED medical equipment, HeartSafe America, Inc., Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator products and Snap Fitness designed a program to protect each facility with the necessary AED medical product and guidelines to remain in compliance with each state’s AED protocols.

The nation-wide AED program, which was introduced in June of 2007, continues to have tremendous success and growth. Growing at a rate of twenty new locations a month. Each Snap Fitness location AED package and maintenance program includes the (AED) Automated External Defibrillator, carrying case, CPR ready kit, ID kit, wall cabinet with alarm and the American Heart Association certified on-line training program. The package and program was designed specifically for that Snap Fitness location and size.

The Challenge:
Develop a detailed program for Snap Fitness facilities to follow AED guidelines and remain in compliance with state AED protocols:

  • Accumulated state protocols & regulatory information for each Snap Fitness location.
  • Create an AED emergency response program protocol.
  • Generate a monthly review of the overall plan, equipment and training maintained by an online, web based data management system.
  • Created a “customer packet” for each customer to reference as we instruct him or her through the device “set up”. This packet is delivered with each AED package and has a checklist to be followed by each owner.
  • Educate the customer about the capabilities of the device via an online demonstrations and conference.
  • Instructed customer how to put the device in service, in the wall mountedalarmed cabinet.

The Solution:
Meeting the challenges to the satisfaction of Snap Fitness, solutions should feature:

  • Inclusion of medical direction and oversight thereby maintaining a plan for monitoring the AED equipment and training.
  • The owners’ ability to pull “check” reports, track expiration of pads, batteries and his trained personnel onsite in real time.
  • Recommended web based conferencing software for training and inspections
  • The AED program design with the customer and its needs in mind

The Results:
The program design met with certain success with the following results:

  • The program now has the site assessment document attached to each address where each AED is located.
  • Owners can now pull “check” reports, track expiration of pads, batteries and his trained personal onsite in real time.
  • Users are able to work with each client via web-conference to check all devices self tests and record all the expiration dates of pads and batteries and training.
  • The program now provides a full scale AED deployment on a national level that encompasses what AED-SHOP is all about - our customer’s needs and continued support.

As a result of this program, nine states now have each Snap Fitness facility mandated to have at least one AED present and one to three trained personnel in AED/CPR training on location. With other states soon to follow, Snap Fitness has become an industry leader and is protected by the Good Samaritan laws.

Snap Fitness is based in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, MN. It is the fastest-growing franchisor of compact, state-of-the-art, 24-hour fitness centers in Canada and the United States. They offer franchisees a proven, affordable business model that enables absentee ownership and provides members a fast, convenient and affordable workout alternative to oversized, overpriced and overcrowded health clubs.

What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)?

SCA is a condition in which the heart stops suddenly and unexpectedly due to a malfunction in the heart’s electrical system. This malfunction causes a life threatening abnormal rhythm called an “Arrhythmia”. The most common “Arrhythmia” is “Ventricular Fibrillation”.
When a Ventricular Fibrillation occurs, the heart’s rhythm becomes so “chaotic” that the heart quivers and can no longer pump blood to the brain

How can SCA be treated?

The only way to combat this condition is with an electrical shock delivered by a small piece of medical equipment called a defibrillator. The pulse from the defibrillator actually stops the chaotic state of the heart, allowing it to reset and start beating normally.Early defibrillation, especially when delivered within three minutes of a person's collapse from SCA, does provide the best chance of survival.
